Behind the Mic: Meet Your Host
I’m Brad Zomick, founder of Spectamur, an executive branding consultancy helping leaders get LinkedIn Famous. For years, I’ve been fascinated by the convergence of personal branding and business success.
During 12 years in B2B SaaS marketing, I watched LinkedIn transform from a job search site into a platform where authentic stories and bold ideas drive conversations—and conversions.
I came up in marketing during the rise of inbound strategies. Like many marketers, I followed this playbook:
Wrote SEO-optimized blog posts
Collected email addresses via eBooks
Sent emails until recipients bought or unsubscribed
It worked—until it didn’t. By 2017, returns were declining. I urged my CEO and sales team to post on LinkedIn.
To make my case, I tested short, tweet-style updates against storytelling posts. Storytelling posts generated 100x more engagement, proving the power of authentic narratives. Yet, many declined, finding it outside their comfort zones. Back then, LinkedIn was just beginning to evolve.
During COVID, everything changed. In-person events disappeared, forcing CEOs to connect and share stories online. LinkedIn became a virtual water cooler. Pioneers like Chris Walker posted daily, garnered millions of views, and built businesses. CEOs noticed—and joined in.
LinkedIn Is So Much More Than Personal Branding
SEO and cold email are in decline. Marketing to the 5% of buyers in-market often leads to a demand capture trap—a race to the bottom on limited supply. These approaches, while targeting immediate intent, lack long-term equity-building potential.
Focusing on the 95% out-of-market builds an audience that knows, likes, and trusts you. When these buyers enter the market, your brand is top of mind, enabling you to compete on value instead of price.
The most successful leaders use LinkedIn to:
Build trust and credibility
Influence industries and shape conversations
Attract talent, investors, and partners
It's the new (old) playbook
At its core, LinkedIn Famous is about the human side of business. People influence people, and conversations drive commerce. Your LinkedIn profile isn’t just a resume; it’s a magnet. By sharing experiences and vulnerabilities, you create a narrative that attracts interest.
Founder-led branding is an old playbook. Leaders like Marc Benioff and Steve Jobs mastered storytelling long before LinkedIn. They generated buzz at events like Apple’s WWDC or through stunts landing on the Wall Street Journal’s front page. Today, the same principles apply, but the stage has shifted to LinkedIn.
Personal branding on LinkedIn isn’t just about content. It’s a powerful convergence of disciplines:
Grassroots Publicity: Share your message with a curated audience
Product Marketing: Showcase differentiation through stories and case studies
Demand Generation: Amplify reach with promotions and targeted content
Account-Based Marketing: Build meaningful relationships with stakeholders
Partnerships/Biz Dev: Develop ecosystem partnerships
Outbound Sales: Use direct messages to convert connections into clients
The Data Behind the Behavior Shift
LinkedIn’s rise as a business strategy cornerstone is backed by compelling data. According to Dentsu B2B research, 52% of buyers prioritize personal factors like trust and values alignment when deciding. The study also found that being an active thought leader is now a top-three decision factor.
Inc. Magazine reported CEO activity on LinkedIn grew by 23% in 2024, with a 31% increase in followers for these executives. Furthermore, 60% of CEOs cite LinkedIn as the most important social platform.
Love it or hate it, personal branding on LinkedIn is here to stay. If you’re not telling your story, someone else will—and they might not get it right. Without a LinkedIn presence, visibility, credibility, and influence can suffer, leaving competitors to seize opportunities. Cultivating a personal brand on LinkedIn is essential.
